NEWSON HALTS THE RUN
Matthew Newson became the first formula I driver to beat Andy Smith at the Knockhill Trioval in a couple of years and in doing so went through to win the final and a handful of Word Championship qualifying points.
Smith had won both of his heats but it was all Newson in the final and after going into the lead early on went through to record an easy win, picking up goodies from Millers Oils for his troubles.
WINGS TOGETHER
Wings make you fly is a popular advert on the tele just now but for Stuart Mitchell and Ian Thompson they mean getting put off the grid!
Mitchell had spun at the hairpin and was then almost collected by Thompson only for the offset wings to come together and as a result both were torn and tattered and off the grid they had to go!
ROLLERS
There were a couple of rollovers up at Knockhill where Emma Mellis rolled her car going up the incline after hitting the tyres. Brian Wilson on the other hand tangled on the main straight with another car just past the starter on the last lap and ended up on his side. His wing was damaged with a post coming right through but I suppose it was something for him to hang his helmet on!
On Sunday at the Racewall James Lund ended up rolling his formula I on the pit bend - last season he did so in spectacular style on the top bend.
In the twos Ally Noble all but rolled as he was left perched on the pit bend wall but Barry Goldin did it in style after a shove going into the pit bend saw him roll his car at least a couple of times!
SCOTTISH JOY
Andy Smith may have lost his unbeaten record at Knockhill but he managed to make it three Scottish formula I championships in a row!
Smith had to take a back seat as his brother Stuart won two heats and looked good for the final. However it was Andy who made the better of the starts and he quickly made up a lot of places. Once he hit the front that was it and he coasted to an easy win although when he tried to power the car around the pit bend after taking the chequer his wheel came adrift and he had to three wheel it to the start finish line!
QUALIFYING POINTS
The formula II World Championship qualifying round was a cracker with contact galore throughout the early stages then at the close and the fans loved it.
The first bend saw Ally Noble and Stuart Anderson out and soon afterwards on the sidelines were Rob Speak and Barry Goldin.
There was a quietish green flag spell but on the last bend Ian Thompson made contact with the leader Stuart Mitchell who spun but then so too did Thompson allowing George MacMillan through to win.
