Turners Talk - 11th October 2008
MIDDLER'S TROUBLES
The Middlers haven't had their troubles to seek over the past few weeks and it was young Dennis who was in the wars on Saturday night. Dennis had been under pressure from Chris Burgoyne for a few laps but when going into the pit bend, it would appear that Burgoyne's throttle jammed in the wide open position. As a result they both hit the pit bend wall hard with Dennis' car rolling and coming down on its side. No sooner had it done so than it burst into flames and it seemed an age to extinguish a very persistent fire.
Luckily Dennis emerged unhurt apart from a mouthful of foam and was on hand to present the trophy to the final winner.
However "old" Dennis pulled a muscle in his leg and decided to go to the USA for a holiday. His flight was delayed and then to compound his woes he was in a crash where I am glad to say he hobbled out unhurt!
WHITE/YELLOW WINNERS
The final of the white/yellow challenges were decided on Saturday night where blue grader Kevin Smart went through to win the formula II version whilst Barry Jones came through to win the saloon version.
IT'S NO MA ENGINE!
Barry Folan made his first appearance of the year in the formula IIs, not with his own chassis but with that of Steve Donavan's.
In the second heat the engine seized and he dropped oil with Lee McGill, Robin Little, Ryan Walker and Chris Burgoyne all getting caught up with the latter the only one to restart.
LOWER GRADERS DOMINATE THE STOCK RODS
Whilst there was a good turn out of stock rod drivers on Saturday night it was the lower grade drivers who dominated with heat wins going to Andy Russell and James Jack, both yellow graders whilst Paul Fairley took heat three and his first win.
Fairley was soon well clear during the final when the dreaded yellow flags appeared but he was able to open up a slight lead on the restart. However there was another stoppage after the challengers had "a coming together" going into the pit bend with the race again being suspended and then stopped with quite a few cars needing to be towed away from the oval.
SCOTT TAKES THE FINAL
White grader Gavin Scott left the Racewall with his first final win under his belt although he only led the first couple of laps. First home was Robbie Newall but he was penalised for jumping the start and dropped to third thus handing the win to Scott.
SALOONS IN GOOD FORM
The saloon drivers were in good form on Saturday night where Kevin Webster was having his first outing of the season - no relation to Shaun or Steve!
The top two drivers in the track points race, Frankie Cunningham and Stuart Shevill Jnr each won a heat.
Willie Mitchell led the final for sometime before being caught and passed by Shevill jnr then Shaun Webster. However Shevill Jnr went on to win the final and then was taken around the wall by Webster after both had received the chequer.
