Alan Kirkaldy won an exciting Scottish formula II championship at the Cowdenbeath Racewall on Saturday night despite having to survive a couple of race suspensions which negated the leads he had built up.
There were quite a few shunts in the Scottish and in one Holly Glen and Stephen Forster tangled and ended up rolling before being collected by another couple of cars. Luckily, despite the severity of the shunt, she escaped with bumps and bruises Then in the following heat Kirkaldy was the meat in a three car sandwich on the main straight after cars tangled whilst Ian Forster took all the force of a multiple car shunt on the top bend in other incidents.
In practice Tom Adcroft’s wing fell off the car whilst Jimmy Wallace hit the pit bend wall.
In the saloons Adam Low rode the pit bend wall but continued as if nothing had happened and there were a few spins and shunts along the way.

KIRKALDY’S SCOTTISH DELIGHT
There were only 27 formula II drivers at the track for the Scottish Championship with Gregor Turner forced to sit out the race when his clutch failed. Visitors to the track included Nigel Davies and Tom Adcroft.
The Scottish Championship started the meeting and the drivers hadn’t completed a lap before Holly Glen was rolled and also claimed past winners Chris Burgoyne and the defending champion Gordon Moodie. On the restart Emma Mellis and Tam Meikle fought for the lead with Meikle taking over on lap four but then lost out to Kirkaldy on lap eight. However when Ian Borthwick was hit and ended up against the wall on the back straight the race was suspended.
On the restart Kirkaldy led from Meikle but George MacMillan Jnr was soon through into second spot but on lap 14 the yellows were out after Jason McDonald and Raymond Dick tangled on the pit bend. This time MacMillan Jnr was nudging Kirkaldy as they slowly moved to the start and when they did go Kirkaldy was able to open a slight gap over MacMillan Jnr whilst behind them there was a close dice between Garry Sime, Robbie Dawson and Adcroft.
At the chequer it was Kirkaldy who was first across the line and he led home MacMillan Jnr and Sime.
Heat one was won by MacMillan Jnr who led home Dawson and Dennis Middler. Heat two gave victory to Burgoyne who was ahead of MacMillan Jnr and Sime.
Moodie came through the field to win the Chapman trophy final and he led home Sime and MacMillan Jnr.
MacMillan Jnr then went on to win the Grand National from Sime and Dawson with Moodie in sixth place.

SHEVILL JNR WINS SALOON FINAL
In the saloons there was plenty of action with Stuart Shevill Snr back out in his son’s spare car whilst Ian McLaughlin made his return to the scene after his leg break.
The opening heat went to Shevill Snr who led home Stuart Drobinski and Chris Lattka. In heat two it was Glen Heeps who picked up an easy win over Shevill Jnr and Lattka.
There were a few early skirmishes when the saloon final started before Heeps got through into the lead with Barry Russell appearing in second place. However when one of the cars slowed the race was suspended and whilst Heeps led the field away he now had Russell, Drobinski and Shevill Jnr in close order. Russell forced his way into the lead with Heeps spinning and when he did restart he was clipped and his car stopped on the back straight. Russell now had Shevill Jnr on his back bumper as they restarted and after five laps Shevill Jnr found the inside line to take the lead. However Drobinski was reeling in the leading cars moving into second then closing right up onto Shevill Jnr’s back bumper. Going into the pit bend the cars were side by side and on the run up to the chequer Shevill Jnr was just ahead by the width of a bumper from Drobinski as they crossed the line with Russell in third.
Russell won the Allcomers race from Shevill Snr and Lattka.
